Methan CBP project which is located at village Methan in Siddhpur Taluka , Distt: Mehsana of Gujarat (the largest community size biogas project) was installed and commissioned on 25 th April , 1987. This project has been dedicated to the people of Methan in recognition of their spirit of co-operation and total commitment . The project is being managed very efficiently by the local body namely “The Silver Jubilee Bio-gas Producers & Distributors Co- operative Society Ltd., Methan”.

Methan is a small village having a population of about 5000 persons having about 460 Households. The success story of setting up and efficient management of the project in this village has evoked considerable interest in the Global ‘Energy Scenario’ . The world bank and the B.B.C. have reportedly shown interest in the coverage of this ‘ MODEL’ plant . The daily biogas use for 5-6 hours by the village households has helped in saving approximately 7800 tonnes firewood, so far, valued of Rs. 35.50 lacs , which otherwise would have been chopped & burnt.

Apart from biogas project , in the year 1992-93 under plantation scheme 50,000 plants were planted with the help of Methan Silver Jubilee Bio-gas Co-operative Society, on the gram panchayat land so as to improve the Environment surrounding of the village and later on the village was adopted as a URJA GRAM.

When the CBP project concept has failed due to various reasons, this village is the unique example where the community based Bio-gas project is still functional having back bone of true co-operation among the people for a noble and common cause.
