Energy conservation awareness workshop for engineering
college
Shri J.M. Acharya, Director, GEDA
delivering key note address
At : L.D. Engineering College,
Ahmedabad, March 2007 |
Energy is the most vital
resource for development of any nation and particularly for
developing country like India. While our country accounts for about
16% of the World’s population we only 1% of the World’s fossil fuel
resources. India depends on imported oil for meeting 75% of its
energy demand for which it spends huge amount of foreign exchange.
Besides the rapidly increasing energy demand, the degradation of the
global environment has also become a matter of great concern. In
view of the grim Energy Scenario of the country and the degradation
of the global environment the Energy Conservation Act was enacted by
the GOI in the year 2001 with the objective to promote energy
efficiency in all sectors of economy. Agencies were designated by
the Bureau of Energy Efficiency Ministry of Power, GOI) for
implementation of the EC Act at state-level. GEDA – Gujarat Energy
Development Agency was designated in Gujarat State.
Under the provisions of the EC Act Energy Efficiency Capacity
Building and mass awareness programme has been projected amongst the
most important activities. Mass awareness programmes about energy
conservation & efficiency in various sectors – viz. education,
domestic, agriculture, commercial, industries and transportation,
have been targeted in the EC Act. Manpower training to create energy
professionals forms a major programme under the EC Act to meeting
the immerging demand.
GEDA undertook a Energy Conservation Awareness Programme for
engineering colleges during year 2006-07. A training module,
covering important aspects of energy conservation, was developed and
EC Awareness Workshops were conducted in 14 engineering colleges.
Over 2000 final year engineering students, college teachers and
representatives from local industries participated in the workshops.
The Workshops comprised of powerpoint presentation on efficient use
of industrial equipments and processes like motor, pumps, fans,
compressors, air-conditioning plants, boiler & furnaces and case
studies, by experienced energy consultants and GEDA experts. The
workshops were aimed highlighting the importance of energy
efficiency in changing global scenario and introducing the concept
of energy conservation to the future engineers and professionals.

Registration kits and reading material was distributed to the
participants. Soft and hard copies of the training material were
given to each of the engineering colleges where workshops were
organized. Financial assistance of Rs.5000/- was also provided to
each of the colleges for meeting organizational expenses. The names
