The mission of the Unit is to build and manage the agency's information reservoir to aid planning, promotion and development of information products and services and position GEDA as a leading 'information provider' on energy-environment, and sustainable development issues at the regional and national levels.

The main task of the Unit is to develop and disseminate information products, which include reference and referral services, current awareness services, indexing and abstracting services, documentation and compilation of the state-of-the-art reports, research reports and papers, articles, publications and networking these services through a vast subscriber database.

The Unit acts as an interface between amorphous information web and specific need of the user by utilizing state-of-the-art information technologies to provide the uniquely required nuggets of information. Packaging and patterning is an on-going activity for effective in-house and outreach activities to disseminate information to multi profile user groups. Significant among these are students, researchers, academicians, energy professionals, energy planners, managers, industrialist and implementers.

The activities of the Unit are broadly classified as -

Project /Process Documentation Services - Documenting the results of Agency's work in terms of projects, programmes, events and research and other related issues through field and file research and extensive reference and referral work, and its analysis and consolidation through appropriate packages.

Information Design Services - Content architecture through strategic content shaping to suit the environments it is to be presented in with the intention of achieving particular objectives in relation to the needs of users. This includes products such as user manuals, journals, newsletters, proceedings, research reports and papers, speeches and keynote addresses, interactive networks, directories, who's who and educational activity packages.

Networking Services - Develop and maintain a network of individuals and institutes to facilitate effective information sharing, efficient resource utilization, and technology transfer and fund mobilization.

Information Support Services viz. Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), Current Awareness Services, Abstracting and Indexing Services and Reprography Services.

Information Dissemination Services - Use conventional and new media to facilitate information flow to the target audience through effective channels.

Database Development / Management Services - Manage, compile and develop statistical and bibliographic databases.
