GEDA has been publishing Urjapatra as a quarterly thematic journal with a comprehensive content design since 1988. The journal was designed for a broad appeal across a wide target spectrum that included NGO's, implementers, manufactures, educators, students, renewable energy professionals and lay audiences. The contents were been woven into editorial package that combined:
- User-friendly technology profiles including operation and maintenance
- Updates on policies, projects, and R&D - worldwide and nationwide
- Reports from the field and insights into the ' hard and soft' field feedback and report on successes
- Provide an interdisciplinary bridge in key areas of concern energy and environment, energy education
- Bibliographic annotations and references
- Government schemes and policies
- Report on GEDA projects and activities, subsequently widened to encompass a national coverage
- Special interest pullouts as posters & booklets
As adequate user - friendly data on renewable energy was unavailable to support the promotion of an emerging technology Urjapatra was very well received and has been a pioneer journal of its kind. The idea was to publish a journal- that was ready - reference for " technically - lay audiences. Has been appriciated through its long "shelf life, with demands for decade old back issues still persisting.
Some of the themes covered include: Energy from Sun/Wind/Wood, Renewable Energy, Energy conservation in Homes & Industries, Rural Energy Management, Energy Plantations, Energy & Environment, Energy Education, Energy Basics, Energy Play, Do It Yourself, Solar cooker, Improved Chulha. Solar Photovoltaics etc.
